Spartan Stadium is an iconic sports destination that has been a fundamental part of the Michigan State University Spartans experience since 1923. Its impressive history makes it a must-see for football fans and athletic enthusiasts alike, providing thrilling cheers and electrifying plays with every game. Whether you’re cheering in awe or simply taking it all in, the Spartan stadium is sure to make your visit one to remember.
Michigan State’s Spartan Stadium has celebrated over 99 seasons of hosting exciting football games. Home to the Spartans since 1923, this beloved stadium has seen almost 70% victories in its 500 home games – including a memorable 2013 win for MSU against Indiana during their landmark 500th game celebration on October 12.
Spartan Stadium, or the Woodshed as it’s affectionally known by fans, is one of the nation’s premier college football venues. Boasting a capacity of 74 866 (originally 75 000), Spartan has won two prestigious Sports Turf Managers Association Field Of The Year awards – an outstanding achievement for any stadium in America.
Spartan Stadium is an elite collegiate football venue – and that’s no small feat. The field has achieved the esteemed Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) Field of the Year honors twice in 2005 & 2016. In 2019, it underwent a massive transformation when its modular system was replaced with conventional grass, marking 33 years since Spartan Stadium saw natural green again. It makes one wonder what miracles could be brought about by 2021.
Spartan Stadium’s new grass is grown using elite turfgrass from Tuckahoe Turfgrass Farms, a nationwide provider of high-quality field sod. Their soil matches the specially engineered root zone in Spartan Stadium – and that same type of athlete-approved greenery can be seen in some of pro football’s greatest venues like Lambeau Field, Lincoln Financial Field, and Heinz Field. To ensure successful installation for maximum athletic performance on game day, Michigan State worked with Fields Inc., one team united by their passion for creating perfect pitches.
For over six decades, Spartan Stadium has been renowned for its enthusiasm and commitment. Just last year, in 2021, a whopping 420,808 spectators flooded to witness MSU’s electrifying home games – with an astonishing 76 549 fans present at the Arizona State matchup alone! Being amongst NCAA’s top 25 teams by attendance every season since 1957 (excluding 2020 due to COVID-19 protocols), the Spartans have continued this legacy of grandeur, ranking 17th overall in 2021 and averaging 70 135 thrill-seekers per game.
